To Show Them That It Can Be Done
A lot of students ask me how they can improve their oral English. Maybe they are looking for a miracle fix, but as we all know, there isn’t one! I say that they should practise English outside the classroom. They say they have no way to do so. I say try English corner. They say not enough foreigners go there. I say that they don’t necessarily need foreigners in order to improve their English, I say they could spend 10 minutes a day practising English with each other. They say they have no time. I say they could do it at lunch time. They say it is too strange to speak English with another Chinese person. Excuses, excuses, excuses! I say they need to get over it and just speak to each other.
They find this hard to grasp.
Today, I rang an Irish person I know, who is on her exchange year in Dalian. She is studying Chinese in Edinburgh. Guess what, we did start off speaking in English but it turned out that we used Chinese for maybe 90 percent of the whole conversation. Granted, it did feel a bit odd to speak Chinese with an Irish person where clearly we could have communicated better in English, but it was good practise for our oral Chinese and next time it won’t feel so strange! So, I guess I now have the proof that it can be done, so the students have no excuse for avoiding practising their English with each other!!

Have you noticed they never seem to actually know what practice means? Not even in a pragmatic sense, but just the basic definition of the word. Nothing.
You speak for many of us my friend.

yeah, We tried speaking english in our dorm.English even made more sense for people from different cities with different accent in China. But shame we were not sticking to it,we learnt better mandarin instead of English.
I also try writing my english blog..emmm, guess a lot of mistakes there.I feel horror to live in England with such crappy English.

i think practice does make a lot of sense or perhaps this is the only thing which makes sense with an improvement in a language. initially it is difficult but as you go definately you will be more comfortable with your English. I am the best example. but remember to learn a language there should never be any complancency. there is never an end to see in sight, even with your own mother tougne.

Someone once gave me some advice for studying Chinese, and I think it works well for english study as well.
If you don't have an English environment, make one in your head.
If you're getting on a bus, say to yourself in english
"I'm getting on the bus. I'm putting two rmb into the money box. I am now sitting down next to a very hot girl."
Every action during your day can be accompanied with an english sentence in your head.
"The hot girl just slapped me in the face. Wow, it really hurts. Maybe I'll get off at this stop. I'm getting off the bus now. Hey look, there's a foreigner!"
"哈喽!"

hello,everyone,
what you said is absolutely right.
In fact, practicse is the only for learning languages, not matter English or Chinese, just like a baby to learn how to speak. A deaf alway a dummy.
Too many excuses is the vital we can't do it well, just because of laziness, as Derek refered, no partner, too shy,no time,no money.
Break the ice and try our best. Culture communication is so interesting. Let's enjoy it.
Sorry, i am too lazy:)
