For All You BBC Fans...

So, you are in China and can’t view the BBC news website (unless you use a proxy)? When looking for the football results this evening, I remembered that at home we used to use the BBC’s teletext, Ceefax. Well, guess what? Ceefax has a website, www.ceefax.tv! Click on the index link on the right hand side to pup-up a window showing the teletext. Retro-tastic! Pity it didn't play that BBC song from the end of Austin Powers, "BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, BBC Five, BBC Six, BBC Seven, BBC Heaven!!"

So, for now you can look at news from the BBC online in China!

Here Comes The Summer

The spring (Irish summer) has finally arrived here! For the first time since maybe October, the Dalian temperatures have overtaken those in Ireland! After a few weeks of rainy days and temperatures hovering around the ten degree mark, it’s finally heating up!! Today it was something like 20 degrees! Time to get out the sun cream and head to the beach! It will be great if it’s like this for the May holiday next week!

Had an exercise-packed weekend. Dalian is really good in that you don’t have to go far to find the sea or to climb a hill. Headed cycling on Binhai Road (plenty of hills) and then hit up Tai Shan (台山) for great views of the Xinghai Square, the sea and the city.

Hopefully during the holiday I can do more of the same and also head to Lushun, to the south of Dalian. Gotta be careful down there as some of the areas are military zones which are out of bounds to foreigners!!

Checkin' In

Just writing a few lines to say what’s going on in Dalian…

Well, at last, the weather is warming up here! It’s very pleasant outside- to stroll around the campus or to go for a walk along the seaside. Last Sunday, a few of us took a nice afternoon stroll from Tiger Beach to FuJiaZhuang along BinHai Road. BinHai Road is one of Dalian’s main scenic attractions: a winding coastal road with nice views of the sea. One thing I like about Dalian is that you can go to places like this: see nature, breathe relatively clean air and get away from the crowds- definitely a plus in China!

I’ve recently made new friends from all around the place: Chinese people, Japanese people, Korean people and even some Germans! It doesn’t feel that strange talking in Chinese to someone from Japan or Korea, but does feel a bit weird talking Chinese to a German! All part of the experience!

I heard lately that people reckon foreigners in Dalian don’t say hello to each other on the streets. To be honest, it doesn’t bother me. I don’t know why we should? Just cos they have a white face, it doesn’t mean we are connected in any way! I came over here to experience new things and to meet people from new places: not to live in a home away from home! I guess for some newly-arrived foreigners who don’t speak Chinese, they are eager to make new friends, so for them, it’s nice if the whiteys say hi to each other!

The expat community in Dalian is definitely growing, and sites like dalianxpat.com are doing a lot of positive things for expats here, like offering an online forum and organising events. I notice a difference in Dalian between when I first arrived and now. A lot more foreigners around the place these days. I guess it’s a good thing in one way, that it makes Dalian a more international city and hopefully increasing the quality of international food here! However, now a lot of the bars are overcrowded with foreigners. It probably makes Chinese people feel like they are on a different planet when they go into Dave’s or the Nepalese bar of a Friday night!

The Labour Day Holiday is coming up: 7 days off at the start of May where everyone wants to go on holidays at the same time. Like in the National Holliday last October, I think I just might stay around Dalian. There are still a lot of places around here I haven’t been to. I can get on me bike and have a look around!

I have been hitting the pool quite a bit lately too. Trying to keep myself in some sort of shape! I can handle the front crawl (some call it freestyle) fine. I may not have perfect technique or fitness but I can get from A to B quite quickly. All the Chinese people learn breast stroke first. Maybe I am just stupid, but I can’t seem to get it right. Everyone else seems to be faster. Seems rather a wacky stroke to me anyway- people with small, non-webbed feet trying to swim like frogs. I can’t figure out how that leg kick can actually move water and generate thrust! I’m gonna have to find me a good teacher who can explain it properly to me.

Radio Show Now Online!

I finally got a copy of the recording of the radio show I did last week. Unfortunately, it was given to us on tape, so either the tape itself or the tape recorder I borrowed wasn’t so good, resulting in pretty iffy sound quality (that’s the excuse to cover up the dodgy singing and iffy spoken Chinese)!!

Since I have no web space for the MP3, I slapped it into an AVI file and put it up on YouTube. You can either click the play button below or else click on this link. By the way, there is no video. It's supposed to be a black screen. I have been fighting with the computer all day trying to put the MP3 into an AVI file! Maybe I can find a way to put a slideshow of pics on it, to make the viewing experience more interesting

Radio Show

My radio career got off to a good start today. The recording that was made 2 weeks ago finally got aired this afternoon! I was surprised that I actually sounded ok! I tried recording it using the computer but for some reason, the whole thing didn’t record properly :(

I think I can get a copy of the show and stick it up on the web somewhere. I don’t have enough space on greatblogofchina.com, so if anyone knows an MP3 equivalent to YouTube, please let me know. The alternative is to make an AVI with no video and stick it up on YouTube.
